Nain is located in central Iran and is the capital of the district of the same name. In the city, which has a remarkable mosque (Madjed Djomeh) from the 10th century, carpets of extraordinary fineness are knotted, the luxury class of Persian carpets, so to speak. The fine knotting is matched by the razor-sharp, precise pattern. A characteristic of Nain is its largely practiced composition of white and light blue, with an artistic, meticulous shearing creating a slightly relief-like effect. Nain carpets are traded especially in Isfahan. Nain are knotted with the Persian knot, which is less common in Persian carpets; the Turkish knot is more common. Only in the Nain region is the fineness of the carpets measured by the number of threads of the yarn used to knot the carpet. The term la stands for thread or threads and the number in front of it indicates the number of threads that were used for the yarn. So the fewer threads that were twisted together to make the yarn, the thinner the yarn and the finer the Nain carpet. For Nain 4-la carpets, this corresponds to around 1 - 2,000,000 knots per square meter. The fineness can vary greatly, because a relatively fine yarn also allows for coarser knots than usual.
