The city of Isfahan (also: Esfahan) is located in southwestern Iran and was formerly called Aspadana. In the 17th century, Isfahan was considered one of the richest and most magnificent cities in the world. Isfahan is closely linked to the history of oriental carpets. Under the Safavid kings Abbas I and Abbas II, Isfahan became a stronghold of the art of knotting, which spread as far as India. Today's Isfahan carpets are exemplary and, above all, good replicas of Isfahan's heyday in terms of knotting technique. They are among the most valuable Persian carpets.
