Farahan (also: Feraghan) is an important carpet center and is located in the Ghom-Arak-Hamadan triangle in central Iran in a remote highland. Farahan's heyday was in the 18th century when Nadir Shah settled weavers from Herat here, hence the frequent Herati (Mahi) pattern in many variations. Most Farahan carpets were knotted in Muskabad, which was destroyed at the end of the 19th century. In the 19th century, Farahan was very popular in England and was also called Gentleman Carpet there. Most Farahan have a continuous repeat pattern, but also offset corners, but all look as if they are covered in flowers. The warp and weft (the foundation) are kept rather thick and the pile is always made of first-class wool. Farahan are rare and valuable carpets with very subtle colors and patterns.
