Tabriz is the capital of the province of Azerbaijan in northwestern Iran. The name is derived from Tav-riz, which in Pahlavi is translated as the source of the rivers and thus refers to the countless springs that emerge from the Sahend volcano. According to tradition, the city was founded by the Caliph Harun al-Rashid around the year 800. Tabriz has been a very important carpet production center in the country since the 17th century. The fine Tabriz knots are considered to be the best knotted in Iran.
